What is spaced repetition?

Spaced repetition is a learning technique that schedules reviews at increasing intervals. Instead of cramming the same range over and over, you review it just before you’re likely to forget it. The idea is simple: the better you know something, the less often you need to review it. If you struggle with a spot, you’ll see it again soon. If you ace it, the next review is pushed further out — maybe tomorrow, then next week, then next month. This approach is backed by decades of memory research and is the same method used by language-learning apps like Anki.

How it works in RangeSharp

RangeSharp uses the FSRS v6 algorithm (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler) to manage review scheduling. Here’s how it works:
  1. Each spot gets a card — When you first train on a spot, RangeSharp creates a spaced repetition card for it.
  2. You train and rate your performance — Your accuracy on each session determines how well you know the spot.
  3. The algorithm schedules the next review — Based on your performance, FSRS calculates the optimal time to review that spot again.
  4. Due cards appear in your recommendations — When a spot is due for review, it shows up on your Home dashboard under “Today’s Focus.”

The review cycle

Day 1: First learn UTG Open range → next review in 1 day
Day 2: Review (good accuracy) → next review in 3 days
Day 5: Review (good accuracy) → next review in 7 days
Day 12: Review (struggled) → next review in 2 days
Day 14: Review (good accuracy) → next review in 10 days
Day 24: Review (good accuracy) → next review in 21 days
...
If you keep getting it right, the intervals grow longer. If you struggle, the interval shrinks so you practice more often.

Spaced repetition and mastery

The spaced repetition system directly affects your mastery level for each spot. As you consistently review spots on schedule and maintain high accuracy, your mastery level increases from 0 (Untrained) to 4 (Mastered).

Using spaced repetition effectively

Train a little every day. Spaced repetition works best with consistent daily sessions. Even 10 minutes per day is more effective than a 2-hour session once a week.

Follow the recommendations

Your Home dashboard shows Today’s Focus — a list of spots that are due for review based on the spaced repetition schedule. Prioritize these over random practice.

Don’t skip struggling spots

When a spot comes up more frequently, it’s because the system detected you need more practice. Resist the urge to skip spots that feel hard — those are the ones where spaced repetition helps most.

Be patient with the intervals

Early intervals are short (1–3 days). As you improve, they stretch to weeks. Trust the process — the algorithm is optimizing for long-term retention, not short-term performance.

Spaced repetition is available on all plans

Spaced repetition works on every plan, including Free. There are no limits on how many spaced repetition cards you can have — only on how many training hands you can complete per day.
